Vibe coding democratizes software development by allowing anyone to generate code through AI prompts. This shift has gained momentum among major tech corporations but poses a significant threat to the future of entry-level white-collar employment. It also poses threats to online security because it prioritizes rapid, surface-level output over the deep technical expertise needed to maintain secure, well-documented systems. By relying on unvetted shortcuts and shared ownership, vibe coding leaves applications vulnerable to cyber attacks and creates an environment of non-organic, unstable software.
“Vibe coding” is a term in software development that refers to prompting Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to generate code rather than writing code manually. This allows anyone to be a software developer. You, reading this article, can code the next Amazon, YouTube, or TikTok, all at your own leisure.
Atlassian, Adobe, HubSpot, Zendesk, and Smartsheet are all user-driven websites, meaning that specific features, layouts, or user interactions on their platforms are at risk of being cloned, causing severe reputation damage and potentially leaking personal data. But rather than cloning these websites at once, vibe-coding allows users to replace specific parts within those companies’ websites and use them for personal means, without adhering to guidelines.
For example, Adobe’s flagship software requires years of development, massive Graphics Processing Unit acceleration, and device support for encoding/decoding, all of which are immensely difficult to recreate or improve fully through AI prompting. However, recreation is possible through arduous tailoring to fit each app’s specific APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) or by legally bypassing them.
The current state of vibe-coding is small-scale and minute in comparison to today’s dominant corporations. But this transformative approach is only on the rise as technology advances and AI continues to develop.
In May 2025, Dario Amodei, the CEO of the AI company Anthropic, said that AI could drive unemployment up 10 to 20 percent in the next one to five years and “wipe out half of all entry-level white collar jobs.” This prediction highlights a growing economic concern, suggesting that as AI automates professional functions, the entry-level jobs that have served as the starting point for professional careers could soon disappear for the next generation of software developers.
Andrej Karpathy, a co-founder of OpenAI and former director of AI at Tesla, coined the term “vibe coding” in Feb. 2025. Since then, massive companies such as Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Google have acknowledged using AI-assisted coding as a faster alternative to manual coding. This could cause a profound shift in the job market, but it could also create code gaps that require specialized knowledge and expertise to fix.
While vibe coding makes programming more accessible, it ultimately weakens the job market by prioritizing surface-level output over real technical skill and long-term expertise. One software can replace thousands of developers and coders, not only risking future unemployment but also leaving websites and applications vulnerable to cybersecurity attacks and the unknown ownership of the code.
Vibe coding uses pre-made code from external libraries, called helper packages and implementation shortcuts, that may never be consciously reviewed, meaning nobody owns the code; that ownership becomes shared and unknown. Although the development process accelerates at tremendous speed, the risk accelerates along with it. If AI takes inspiration from millions of online databases, the product becomes non-organic and easily replicable.
As vibe-coding and AI-assisted coding continue to gain traction, cybersecurity threats will become more apparent. Vibe-coding typically includes traits such as no documentation of the code’s structure, logic, or intended functionality; ignored coding guidelines; reliance on unvetted open-source libraries; and deployment directly into production. This is careless and can result in technical instability and risks of losing data or money due to holes in the AI software.
While we aren’t currently living in a world dominated by vibe coding, the future is frightening. Creativity belongs in the hands of the beholder, but once everyone has the power to create the next massive company, creativity is in jeopardy. The culmination of years of painstaking work may be achievable from a simple 50-word prompt.
