As seasonal holidays approach, it is a good time to recognize the good in life and find opportunities to share that sense of well-being with others. Among other factors, something many are grateful for is their community. To show appreciation and help spread seasonal joy, here are five ways to give back to the community.
No. 1: Donating money
One of the most effective ways to give back to the community is to help those in need, and a straightforward way to do so is to donate money or resources to a reputable charitable organization. Marin has countless organizations to choose from, so it would be beneficial to do some research if you have a specific area of aid you’d like to support, but here are some of the most well-known to start with:
Community Action Marin works in several fields to support people in and around Marin, with programs that combat poverty by assisting families with children and advocating for housing, economic, food, and climate justice. They accept monetary donations and also have a volunteer program.
Adopt a Family is an organization fighting against poverty with rehousing, food, and utility services, and also has a special holiday program that allows donors to purchase and wrap holiday gifts from a family in need’s wishlist. Adopt a Family accepts monetary or gift item donations for the holiday program.
No. 2: Volunteering
Volunteering is a great way to help out on a more personal level. Similar to donating, almost every organization has opportunities to volunteer, whether for a day or on a weekly or monthly basis. One of the best places to volunteer in Marin is the SF Marin Food Bank, which aims to end hunger by distributing food daily, as well as working on long-term ways to address hunger. They offer single and recurring shifts. Another great place for recurring volunteering is The Redwoods senior community, where you can help out and enrich the lives of residents. A third place to volunteer is St. Vincent De Paul, which helps people facing homelessness and offers an opportunity to volunteer by packing and distributing bag lunches. Additionally, all organizations mentioned have options for monetary donations as well.
No. 3: Supporting local businesses
When shopping for holiday gifts, it’s easy to default to Amazon.com, where anything you can imagine is just one click away. However, there are numerous downsides to supporting this company, as it condones many unethical practices, including involvement in the fossil fuel industry. In contrast, shopping locally helps strengthen the local economy, encourages innovation within the community, and reduces carbon emissions associated with shipping and transportation. This holiday season, consider looking inwards for gifts by shopping at one of Marin’s many small businesses.
There are countless shops to choose from, but here are some favorites for inspiration. North & Golden at Montecito Plaza in San Rafael offers a wide selection of gift items, including women’s clothing and jewelry. Jolt In San Anselmo offers a wide range of products, including a large children’s section. Revolution 9 in Fairfax sells a wide range of oddities, including stuffed animals, jewelry, art supplies, and card games. Cactus Jungle in San Anselmo is the perfect destination for plant enthusiasts, boasting a diverse collection of plants and succulents. Proof Lab, a skate shop in San Rafael and a surf shop in Mill Valley, offers clothes, hats, and a selection of surf and skate gear.
No. 4: Acts of kindness
Finding the resources to volunteer or donate to an organization can be difficult, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to give back to the community. Picking up trash around the neighborhood, remembering to recycle, or just offering to help someone out are all great ways to be a supportive community member. Even on a more familiar level, checking in on family or friends you haven’t seen in a while or who are going through health struggles can bring them a lot of joy. You can also spend time with loved ones, give heartfelt or homemade gifts to teachers, neighbors, friends, or family, take some time to consider what you’re grateful for, or just make a meal for someone you care about.
No. 5: Helping on a national level:
Helping out on a local level is a great way to spread positivity in the community, but supporting nationwide organizations with specific goals can make just as big an impact. There are thousands to choose from with many different causes, so it’s prudent to do some research before donating to a given organization. Listed below are some of the most well-known:
If you’re looking for an environmentally oriented organization, the World Wildlife Fund works with animals and ecosystems, striving to save endangered species and their habitats. Suppose you’re passionate about helping war victims or would like to support those harmed by the war in Palestine. In that case, the International Rescue Committee helps victims of war or violence by providing food, education, political advocacy, and other resources. Fighting against gun violence, The Sandy Hook Promise works to prevent gun violence in schools. Regarding organizations for human rights, the Human Rights Campaign and The Trevor Project advocate for equal treatment and provide support for the LGBTQ+ community.
As the holiday season approaches, there are many opportunities to give back and support others. Even small contributions, whether through donations, volunteering, or community involvement. Those who are able to give back have an opportunity to help organizations and community programs that provide assistance during the holiday season.
