The Greek Theater, an amphitheater near the UC Berkeley campus, was built in 1903 and features a standing pit near the stage, abundant seating, and grassy upper levels. The Greek provides a fun family atmosphere while also offering a pleasant concert experience. Additionally, the theater offers a view of the East Bay skyline, which is visible during sunset while performers take the stage. The Greek has also hosted several notable artists in the past, including Vance Joy, Jack Johnson, Gracie Abrams, and The Weeknd.
Fans filled the Greek punctually after the doors opened at six, enjoying opening performances from both Daryl Jones, an indie rock artist, and Mock Media, an electric punk rock band. Jones came out at 7:40 p.m. for a 30-minute set before Mock Media took the stage. Both performers excited the crowd, getting them ready for the star of the show, DeMarco.
DeMarco came on promptly at 9:30 p.m. with fans erupting in cheers. He opened with the song “Shining” from his new album Guitar. He followed up with a fan favorite, “For the First Time,” which had the Greek singing right alongside him. The theatrer was filled with the crowd’s phone flashlights, mimicking the look of a starry night. While the fans swayed and sang, blue and purple lights illuminated the theater.

DeMarco’s concert featured a combination of old songs that fans knew word for word and newer songs that fans were quick to catch on to. One of the more well-known songs that he played was “Still Beating,” a slow song that encapsulates the feeling of driving to the beach on a warm summer day. As DeMarco sang “Honey, my heart still beats for you, even though you don’t feel it,” he engaged with the audience by encouraging a slow rhythmic clap to the beat of the song.
To follow this, DeMarco introduced one of his new songs, “Knockin” by teasing the crowd with several knock-knock jokes. With fans engaged and screaming, “Who’s there?” he seamlessly transitioned from the lighthearted jokes to the meaningful lyrics of his new song.
Later, DeMarco ramped up the energy with his popular track “Freakin Out the Neighborhood.” Fans erupted in cheers at the familiar sound of the guitar intro. The crowd was on their feet, singing along with the upbeat song. This song features a lively guitar riff with an energetic drum beat that got fans dancing. DeMarco entertained the crowd with several different dance moves, including a handstand on stage that had the crowd screaming.
The background of the Greek amplified the experience as DeMarco closed his set with two of his most well-known songs. He danced and swayed around the stage as he sang “My Kind of Woman” and “Chamber of Reflection.” The crowd sang the lyrics word for word, and the theater was filled with heartfelt emotions and unbeatable vibes. The lights fully illuminated the stage as fans slowly filed out of the theater, with DeMarco’s outro still playing in the background.
Despite playing some of his lesser-known music, the crowd still enjoyed the show and sang along wholeheartedly to the songs they were familiar with. Mac DeMarco captured a unique, nostalgic, yet emotional vibe, while also keeping things lighthearted and fun. This combination completed the experience, earning the show an overall five out of five feathers.
