Election Thoughts

Election+Thoughts

Kylie Jones

For most students in our generation, this presidential election may have been the first one they have experienced with their own political views, an election with revolutionary possibilities. Since the country has emerged from racial, religious, and gender discrimination during the last eight years. President-elect Donald Trump will have the honor of protecting citizens from all spectrums in the country. To gauge student reaction several students commented pre- and post- election thoughts. Trump supporter Tommy Tozzi commented only after the election.

Artur Kondratyev, Senior
Q: What did you expect the outcome of the election to be?
A: “I thought it was going to be a close match of electoral votes between Clinton and Trump. But as someone who doesn’t care about politics, I thought Hillary would win.”
Q: What was your reaction after Trump won?
A: “After the election, I was a little disappointed. I am actually scared about what is going to happen. I fear that our country may seem weaker to others with Trump as president, and I fear for our relationships with other countries.”

Matt Baldwin, Senior
Q: What did you expect the outcome of the election to be?
A: I expected that Hillary would win, because Trump looked like he wouldn’t be a good president compared to her. Also predicted outcomes earlier in their campaign said she would win.
Q: What was your reaction after Trump won?
A: Honestly, after that point, I didn’t feel any confusion because fingers pointed at him to win the election, and he did. I was disappointed though, that he won.”

Sofia Lin, Senior
Q: What did you expect the outcome of the election to be?
A: I definitely thought it was going to be Hillary. No one took Trump seriously, and most people, including me, thought she would win.
Q: What was your reaction after Trump won?
A: At first, I was in denial. I was taken aback and saddened by the results. For some things in our future, I thought, ‘It’ll be okay’. But for girls, I was more scared because of the threats on our reproductive rights. As a woman of color, it is very scary because trump is promoting discrimination towards minority groups.

Tommy Tozzi, Junior
Q: What did you expect the outcome of the election to be?
A: It was obvious, at least to me. I feel like no one expected him to win the election because people took him as a joke during his campaigns.
Q: What was your reaction after Trump won?
A: After the election, I started laughing because no one expected this to happen, and it did. As for our future, I believe nothing is going to happen in the next four years.
