The Archie Williams girls varsity golf team had yet another successful fall season, ending with a respectable league record of 6-8. Four-year varsity seniors Kaiya Chiu and Mirabelle Davis lead the team to multiple victories, with Mirabelle receiving the Marin County Athletic League’s (MCAL) “Spirit of the Game” award for demonstrating sportsmanship, courtesy, and integrity throughout the season. Mirabelle felt positivity and kindness were key factors that contributed to receiving this award.
“I think always being friendly to every opponent was key to winning the [“Spirit of the Game”] award this season. I played with many more players compared to last season, and I made it a point to encourage everyone, especially when things were tough. Most importantly, I tried to have fun at every match, and I think that positive mindset improved my sportsmanship and playing skills this season,” Mirabelle said.
The team succeeded because they worked together, supported one another, and formed friendships in the process, despite golf being an individual sport by definition. The girls demonstrated camaraderie and enthusiasm toward one another and their opponents, leaning on one another as they mastered this challenging sport.
The girls golf team plays at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, a high-quality facility that enables them to practice to the best of their abilities. Their coach, Andre Demian, is especially grateful to the Meadow Club for its generosity in allowing the girls to practice and compete.
“Playing our home matches and practicing at Meadow Club is the team’s good fortune, as the club is a world-renowned facility to practice and play. The team deeply appreciates the opportunities to train and play at Meadow,” Demian said.
Demian is also excited for the returning athletes and for future seasons with this team.
“With a core group of returning varsity athletes, led by rising juniors Elke Osweiler and Diana Simkins, the prospects of a competitive season in fall of this year are good,” Demian said.
With three rising juniors and one rising senior, the young team is looking forward to playing and competing together throughout their next season. Although they are losing five graduating members, including their two captains, they will continue to work together and grow as a team and as individuals in golf.
“Our team is super close, and I think that’s what makes us work so well together. It doesn’t matter if we win or lose; we always support one another, and that’s really important,” Diana said. “Even though we are losing some seniors, I still think we can be really successful in future seasons, and I’m really excited to play with this team again.”
