From homework to studying or preparing for an exam, Archie Williams’ peer tutoring program exists to support students academically. Offered to all students after school, peer tutoring is a collaborative learning environment where tutors teach other students skills and grow one study session at a time through various educational lessons. Whether they’re struggling with a challenging problem or trying to understand any school-related concept, peer tutoring serves as a helpful resource for students.
The student-led tutoring program takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays right after school until 5 p.m., allowing students to catch up on homework or get help with difficult problems. Peer tutoring sessions are open to any students who need extra academic support, and students may drop in whenever they need help.
Upperclassmen can enroll in the peer tutoring elective to earn elective credit while filling a tutoring position. Peer tutoring is a paid position that not only allows tutors to take on a leadership role but can also help them develop essential collaboration skills. Tutors assist their peers by guiding them through the material and explaining specific topics in an easy and understandable way. Archie Williams senior Tal Hadar has received appreciation from students and teachers throughout their time as a peer tutor.
“You get to be an upperclassman who students look up to, and you get a lot of gratitude from the teachers and students. I can really see how much [the peer tutoring program] helps,” Tal said.

The role of a peer tutor extends beyond academic support. Tutors try to foster a positive and supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions, regardless of how advanced the topic may be.
While there are resources provided after school, students also have the opportunity to sign up for peer tutoring during school, though mainly for basic algebra and science assistance. Teachers of various subjects may recommend students for tutoring, ensuring that those who need extra support receive it. According to Archie Williams counselor Kyle Kassebaum, peer tutoring can be a good addition to students’ resumes when applying to colleges, as it offers a strong extracurricular experience that can help set tutors’ applications apart.
“While you’re giving up an elective, [Peer Tutoring is] not that different from taking a leadership class in a lot of senses. [Additionally, it’s] this really awesome extracurricular activity that you can put in your activity section on your college applications,” Kassebaum said.
While academic improvement is a major goal of the program, the personal growth students experience as tutors and students is equally valuable. The program offers a culture of mutual respect and support, where both students and tutors learn from one another.
Tal, who tutors in subjects such as math, finds it rewarding to see students improve and gain confidence in their abilities. For Tal, tutoring is about being a hands-on, interactive resource for students to utilize.

“Students work really hard and don’t deserve to be given up on, so it’s nice to see and help kids stay on track and show them that math can be fun, and I really enjoy it,” Tal said.
The experience is especially valuable for students considering careers in education or fields that require clear communication skills. For Tal and other peer tutors, the program has served as an excellent foundation for future aspirations.
Archie Williams junior Liat Holden has attended multiple after-school peer tutoring sessions throughout her time at Archie Williams. She has found the program to be very welcoming and approachable for any student who may need assistance.
“I’ve popped into tutoring sessions. [They’re] super convenient and accessible whenever I have anything, from a quick question to [if I need help] studying for an exam. I would really recommend it to anyone,” Liat said.
Peer tutoring at Archie Williams is more than just a resource, it’s an opportunity to build leadership, confidence, and a sense of community within the school. It is available to any student who needs help or wants to assist others. Whether students are struggling or excelling, the program is here to help everyone reach their highest potential.
