Second time’s the charm.

Taking the pitch for their second inaugural season, Drake Varsity Field Hockey looks to improve after a trying first season.

With the program still new, the team hopes to build on their finish last year and the experience of returning seniors.

“Even with a ton of freshman and newbies, we’ve quickly been able to get the team back up to the level we left off at last year. It’s only up from here,” senior Gemma Brown said. 

Lead by captains Neav Healy, Sylvia Potovsky, Alex Toy, and coach Alex Guana, the future of the team appears promising. 

“We had a great inaugural season last year, and we had a really fun experience if we won or lost. I’m looking forward to this new team and season, I know we will work hard and have a good time,” senior Mia Lacey said.

The first two games resulted in a loss, 0-4 to Redwood on Wednesday, September 4th and 0-7 to Berkeley on Saturday, September 7th. However, the players remain optimistic about this season.

More recently the Pirates suffered a 0-9 loss by Tamalpais High School. This Friday they have a second shot at upsetting the Hawks, who sit two spots above them in the standings.

In the next game this Wednesday the girls take on the undefeated Redwood Giants, who came up just short of the MCAL championship last season against University. Team morale is high as the season continues.
