On Friday, Jan. 30, Noah Kahan released his long-awaited single, “The Great Divide,” after teasing the song to crowds at multiple concerts in mid-2024. Throughout the past few years, Kahan rereleased the same album, Stick Season, many times over, with a couple of new songs but mostly featuring new singers on popular songs ranging from “Northern Attitude” to “Everywhere, Everything.” So when Kahan announced a release date, fans were thrilled to be hearing something new.
The fast-paced tune has solemn lyrics. With a less folksy sound than usual for Kahan, “The Great Divide” comes across as slightly overproduced. The music sounds smooth and mostly flows well, but in some parts, it feels like the song switches moods halfway through. This switch-up in his songs feels very original to his style of music, with the shift from upbeat to calm giving his songs a unique feel.
The song lingers for five minutes and 17 seconds, yet it’s five minutes worth savoring. His words are written brilliantly, making the song’s message deliver raw clarity. The chorus repeats three times, but it doesn’t just repeat; it evolves. Slowing the song at the end, close to thirty seconds before the song concludes, makes its tone feel more meaningful.
Those who watched Kahan perform at Bottlerock in May 2025 got a sneak peek of “The Great Divide,” as his performance included this song, which he hadn’t officially released yet. However, since he had played it before at various other concerts over the years, some were already aware of the song.
When Kahan released “The Great Divide,” he provided the press with a clear vision of the core concepts defining his upcoming album of the same name. Kahan stated that he was focusing more on his retrospective tendencies and on how he reflects on past decisions at this point in his life.
While most fans love the song, some have gotten tired of it. After months of playing the unreleased song, “The Great Divide,” when it finally came out, it did not have the same impact of feeling of freshness that is usually felt after a new release. Many thought the final song sounded very different from the live production he would perform many times over. And for some listeners, this thought has proven true, but others who hadn’t heard the song since the concert or at all were pleased with the release so soon after his world tour had ended. Kahan performed this new release at the most recent Grammys and also debuted the music video that went along with it.
Generally, both sides have valid and strong opinions, but most could listen to “The Great Divide” many times over before getting bored. Still, this was just a teaser for his new album that is set to release in late April 2026; this new favorite is just the beginning for many fans, and will tide most over until Kahan officially releases his full tracklist. Altogether, the song earns five out of five feathers.
