2025 saw an onslaught of iconic albums, but only a few stood out for the crowd. From breakout viral sensations to the industry’s most promising newcomers, we have curated a selection of the albums and artists that successfully transcended the fray to earn a place in the hearts of a global audience.
No. 10: Playboi Carti, MUSIC
On March 14, 2025, Playboi Carti released his highly anticipated third studio album, MUSIC, marking his last release since his 2020 album Whole Lotta Red. Though after nearly three and a half years of waiting, Carti reinvigorated fans and put the “I” back into MUSIC. Throughout the 30-song tracklist, the album’s mixtape vibe is Southern trap and rage rap, as Carti shifts to a deeper tone rather than his praised “baby voice.” The album features a star-studded roster including Travis Scott, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, Jhené Aiko, Skepta, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, Ty Dolla Sign, and Young Thug, as well as DJ Swamp Izzo. The opening track, “Pop Out,” stands just a step behind legendary mosh-pit anthems, such as Sheck Wes’ “Mo Bamba” and Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode.” Track eight, “Rather Lie,” featuring The Weeknd, is a hypnotizing pop song with a dose of Carti’s trademarked mumble rap. Track 15, “Good Credit,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, is an energetic trap song with a hidden Drake diss slipped into it. And with all the heavy trap and Atlanta rap, track 21, “We Need All Da Vibes,” frankly revitalizes the album and gives listeners a much-needed breath of fresh air. This melodic, vibey song featuring Young Thug and Ty Dolla $ign stands in stark contrast to the album’s darker production. MUSIC captured Playboi Carti’s commitment to pushing boundaries, proving that innovation and nuance can be just as powerful as lyricism.
No. 9: Tame Impala, Deadbeat
Tame Impala released their album Deadbeat with intense lo-fi influences and classic experimental elements Oct. 17, 2025. Track number three, “Dracula,” took off on social media, inspiring trends and dances across multiple platforms and gaining Tame Impala new listeners. The album has psychedelic elements rooted in thoughtful lyrics and constant rhythm, as seen on tracks “My Old Ways” and “Loser.” While Deadbeat is classic to Tame Impala’s voice, it fails to stray into too many new directions, ironically staying away from genre experimenting despite Tame Impala’s experimental reputation. This album begs to be played full blast through headphones or blasted at a summer dance partys, earning it a spot on carefree music lovers’ playlists. While only a few tracks on this album truly stand out, the techno tone of Deadbeat is still worth a listen and will surely continue to be popular going into 2026.
No. 8: Siena Spiro, Sink Now, Swim Later
Siena Spiro has exploded onto the global music scene, with over 25 million monthly listeners on Spotify after starting her music career in the middle of 2024. The 20-year-old British singer’s vocals are melancholic, cathartic, and raw. She has a gifted voice and is a born storyteller, constantly pulling the audience’s heartstrings and inducing emotional vulnerability. Her album Sink Now, Swim Later was her debut EP, featuring the viral sensation “MAYBE.” which has accumulated over 600 million views on TikTok. Spiro draws inspiration from some of the greats, including Etta James, Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra, and Amy Winehouse, blending 1960s soul and jazz into her own remarkable creation. Sink Now, Swim Later is an eight-course masterclass. The first dish, “Butterfly Effect,” serves as an intense venting session, recalling one decision that changed the course of a relationship with her enigmatic lover. On track two, “Need Me,” Spiro’s inspiration from Amy Winehouse is palpable; her powerful voice is controlling, yet touching. On track five, Spriro’s viral smash “Maybe,” her raspy voice intensifies the song, complementing the background ethereal piano as she expresses the importance of self-worth and acknowledges romantic deception. Spiro is actively bridging the gap between soul and jazz. There is much to come from this young woman, and the world is excited to see where she’ll take us next.
No. 7: The Weeknd, Hurry Up Tomorrow
On Jan. 31, 2025. The Weeknd’s album Hurry Up Tomorrow marked the end of Abel Tesfaye’s famed persona. Releasing albums from 2011 to 2025, The Weeknd’s five-year trilogy consists of After Hours, Dawn FM, and Hurry Up Tomorrow. The narrative follows the Weeknd’s journey, heavily structured around Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. Hurry Up Tomorrow’s opening song, “Wake Me Up,” is straight from Michael Jackson’s back pocket. Produced with Justice, the 1980’s synth-pop beat driven by The Weeknd’s high-tenor vocals makes for a song that should play on every dance floor across America. Track six, “Baptized in Fear,” is a guilty reflection of the choices The Weeknd made in “After Hours.” He feels completely consumed by anxiety and is being drowned (baptized) in emotional terror. Track 13, “Timeless,” with Jordan Carter, is another sensational work of art. The track concurrently holds over 1.3 billion listens on Spotify. Produced by Pharrell Williams, Mike Dean, Ojivolta, and Twisco, the high-energy song, though not lyrically profound, reached the charts and topped them. The Weeknd is here to state that his music is timeless and fame is cemented, and nobody can revoke that from him. To wind down the album, track 19, “The Abyss,” featuring Lana Del Rey, is a harmonic and chaotic exploration of despair, connecting back to The Weeknd’s “XO” persona, derived from the phrase “Ecstasy and OxyContin,” reflecting the drug-abusive lifestyle of The Weeknd in his earlier projects. The album was a fitting conclusion to the trilogy, with fathomless emotional depth; it was enthralling, versatile, and a 90-minute listen that is worth every second.
No. 6: Sabrina Carpenter, Man’s Best Friend
Singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter launched Man’s Best Friend Aug. 29, 2025, following her iconic 2024 album, Short n’ Sweet. Recognized for her clever and flirtatious lyrics, pop sound, and Barbie-like fashion, Carpenter has been making music since 2014. Her music has surely evolved since her debut EP, Can’t Blame A Girl For Trying, and Man’s Best Friend showcases her authentic self and personal musical style. The album varies from songs that make you want to sway in your seat or stand up and start dancing. Track four, “Sugar Talking,” depicts Carpenter dismissing her partner’s love-bombing and demanding action. Track two, “Tears,” hides provocative lyrics behind a lively, disco melody, making you want to burst out singing, despite the meaning of the song. Man’s Best Friend aimed high, but it fell short of the standards set by Short n’ Sweet.
No. 5: Lorde, Virgin
Lorde returned to the music scene after a four-year-long hiatus with an enthralling and deeply vulnerable new album, Virgin. Lorde’s fourth studio album is raw, eerily produced, and it captures the chaos of Lorde’s recent emotional turmoil and her journey exploring her gender identity. Virgin’s lead single, “What Was That,” has that wow factor that pop artists spend years searching for; it’s dark, it’s angry, it’s Lorde returning to the brooding, empowered roots of her 2013 debut album Pure Heroine. Lorde’s lyrics are swallowed in production and spit out again, leaving listeners in a trance. On track seven, “Clearblue,” Lorde sings about a pregnancy scare; on track eight, “GRWM,” she sings about growing into her own interpretation of womanhood. Lorde captures the human experience, switching between feminine and masculine perspectives, a key tribute on the album to her understanding of gender broadening. Lorde’s album Virgin is untamed in the best way. This album is nothing short of iconic, and Lorde truly has done it again.
No. 4: Tate McRae, So Close to What
Pop artist Tate McRae released her third studio album, So Close to What Feb. 21, 2025. McRae, known for her dance skills, made a dance-worthy album reliant heavily on pop production and heavy on the sass. McRae released several tracks ahead of the album’s official release, cultivating excitement among fans and taking social media by storm as her hits, such as track six “Sports Car” and track ten, “It’s ok I’m ok”, took over people’s feeds. McRae’s album is full of 2000s energy and club-esque production reminiscent of Charli XCX’s Brat summer era. McRae is that girl. Her albums’ 16 tracks back that argument till the very end. In “Revolving Door,” McRae recognizes her tendency in relationships to return to past partners after trying to leave, whereas in “Purple lace bra,” McRae sings about her life on tour and how she often feels only heard when she is willing to sexualize herself. Things get suggestive on “Sports Car” and track 14 “2 hands,” but they’re catchy, detailing the ups and downs of rapidly unfolding romances. With overwhelming dancey production and fast-paced lyrical rhythm. So Close to What is empowering, passionate, and so close to perfection.
No.3: Zara Larsson, Midnight Sun
Zara Larsson released Midnight Sun Sept. 26, 2025, though she gained a lot of recognition for it in December. The Swedish pop superstar is making a huge comeback into the music world, even opening for McRae, truly making her a headline, as she references in her song “Stateside” with Pink Pantheress. The confident singer with an undeniable stage presence encapsulates the pop princess vibe with her bright style. Midnight Sun is a 10-track dance album with sassy songs like “Pretty Ugly” and “Hot and Sexy”, but also songs that feel like summer even in January, such as the title track, “Midnight Sun.” Larsson’s song “Lush Life” is also resurfacing, even though it was released in 2015. 2026 summer will be Larsson’s summer, with the new Brat era taken over by her.

In track 11, “A Couple Minutes,” Dean dives into the complexities of past relationships, creating a deep sense of emotional wisdom within the album as she acknowledges the twisted feelings of reconnecting with an ex. Dean’s song, “The Art of Loving,” is a diary entry, giving the album a thoughtful yet lighthearted impact on the listener through soft soul and a jazzy melody. Although Dean is a new star on the music scene, The Art of Loving shows the musical maturity of a veteran, showcasing the true talent she brings to singing and songwriting.
