On Friday, May 23, Archie Williams Peer Resource (PR) organized a Jewish American Heritage Month celebration in the quad during lunch. To celebrate, students gathered in the quad during lunch to participate in games and partake in other PR-provided activities. The event featured different tables with a variety of entertainment and educational opportunities for students to explore Jewish culture.
Archie Williams junior and PR member Henry Nelson explained the event’s significance and the reasoning behind hosting it.
“We’re hosting an event that celebrates Jewish American culture and heritage. The month of May is Jewish American Heritage Month, so Peer Resource decided to hold an event that highlights the culture,” Henry said.
One of the event’s highlights was its Hebrew writing station, where students had the opportunity to learn how to write their names in Hebrew. With guidance from a PR member, students practiced forming Hebrew letters, gaining a deeper appreciation for the language spoken in Jewish communities around the world.
“We have tables set up where you can write your name in Hebrew and learn how Hebrew letters correspond to Latin letters, and Jewish culture trivia questions,” said Archie Williams senior and president of the Jewish Culture Club Sam Williams.
The event aimed to foster inclusion and cultural awareness across the student body. It served as a reminder of the importance of honoring the many heritages that make up the school community.
Archie Williams junior Liat Holden was present at the lunchtime event, and feels that it and ones similar help emphasize the importance of understanding diverse perspectives and practices.
“I think this event is important for the Archie Williams community because it educates students about the different aspects of Jewish culture and its value, and brings different cultures together,” Liat said.
Jewish Heritage Month is observed in May to recognize the achievements and contributions of Jewish Americans throughout history. Events like this lunch celebration help the school community understand and appreciate the cultures that shape our school and bring us together.
