In the past few years at Archie Williams, students have developed a new style. For some reason, it has become “trendy” to rock a tote bag instead of the classic backpack. At the beginning of the tote bag craze, students often wore underdeveloped, cloth bags around their shoulders. However, recently, they’ve devolved to simplistic, leather bags that offer a sturdier and minimalistic design.

The question begins: what benefits do the tote bags offer, and what advantages do they have over the conventional backpack we are all so familiar with? Well, simply put, tote bags are more practical for their accessibility and stylish look. Featuring a sleek design with an interior that optimally compartmentalizes one’s supplies more efficiently than backpacks, tote bags are gaining in popularity. Backpacks are often victims of lost pencils and other small supplies as they disappear in cracks and pockets you didn’t know were ever there. A tote bag’s simple design allows the user to easily find where all of their belongings might be.

When it comes to durability and longevity, both contestants offer a strong claim. Students often gather and use vintage tote bags with a rustic and chic feel, as well as confirmed durability. While this might not have the same exhilarating feeling of buying a new leather tote bag online, costing a heavy bunch, it is an alternative to spending a lot of money for the simple task of carrying some materials to school. Continuing with cost, backpacks are mostly bought from large online stores or name brands, leading to a more expensive outcome. While they do promise durability, one can never be so sure a zipper or stitch won’t fall short. Tote bags have successfully overcome this flaw.

Though backpacks are undoubtedly classic and timeless, tote bags bring style to the board. There is a certain vibe you carry when rocking a tote bag in school. Backpack wearers simply lack this relaxed vibe compared to those bringing their stylized tote bags. As it lies on one shoulder, the bag simply has better flow compared to the dual-shoulder backpack. Yet, such a style comes at a price, as a backpack is easier to wear compared to tote bags. The use of both shoulders for backpacks allows one to carry heavy binders and folders around campus every day with ease, and less future back pain.

Both arguments are convincing. With the levels of comfort, simplicity, longevity, and style the two contestants offer, what does The Pitch recommend? We recommend that you wear whatever you want, whether it’s longing for the tote bag’s unique style or returning to the effortless, timeless, and good old-fashioned backpack.
