On Monday, April 15, the Falcons girls varsity lacrosse team hosted the Terra Linda High School Trojans for a Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) contest. The Falcons came into the game with an overall record of 6-5, while the Trojans sat at 3-5-1. After a competitive game the Falcons pulled through for a 13-9 win.
The Falcons set the tone early in the first quarter with three goals. The Trojans countered with a goal of their own, but Archie Williams continued their offensive dominance with additional points from senior captain Isabelle Connolly and sophomore Ellen Winter brought the score to 5-2 entering the second quarter.
The Falcons expanded their lead with a goal in the early second quarter from senior Kyra Featherstone. From there, the momentum changed in favor of the Trojans. Terra Linda got great looks on goal, but junior goalie Ashira Kim-Price blocked most shots coming her way. The Trojans snuck two goals past her for a halftime score of 6-4.
“Our strengths [in the game were] passing the ball well and moving the ball upfield,” Isabelle said.
As the whistle blew to start the third quarter, both teams came out firing with two goals apiece. The Falcons created more separation with two more points from senior captain Audrey Poster and freshman Olive Diamond. The Trojans didn’t give up and put another goal on the board, shifting the score to 10-7 entering the final quarter.
The fourth quarter began with a quick goal from the Falcons. With a four-point deficit and little time remaining on the clock, the Trojans began to attack offensively. They scored one goal, but so did the Falcons. Terra Linda scored with 40 seconds remaining but the Trojans deflated as freshman Ainsley Sullivan scored the final goal of the game for Archie Williams with 20 seconds left on the clock. The Falcons won 13-9, securing their 7-5 record.
“Getting the win today took a lot of patience coming off a week break, but we kept working and things started clicking for us. We moved the ball really well, and our offense looked good. What wasn’t great were the ground balls, and we had too many penalties which helped them stay in the game,” said head coach Ted Hellman.
The Falcons play their next game Tuesday, April 16, at San Marin High School against the San Marin Mustangs. The Mustangs currently sit with a 12-3 record, but that doesn’t stop Archie Williams from entering the match with confidence and hoping for another MCAL win.
“I am feeling good about our upcoming game against San Marin. They’re very good this year, but I am hopeful we can play well against them,” Isabelle said.
