Boys varsity basketball begins compelling season with win against San Rafael High
The AWHS boys varsity basketball team played their first Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) game against San Rafael High School on Tuesday Nov. 30 at the AWHS home court. AWHS beat San Rafael High by an exceeding advantage of 56-32, exciting fans and families in the stands.
The game started out slow and the score remained close, but as the game continued, the Falcons pulled ahead with the score at halftime being 29-14, AWHS.
Head coach Bret Tovani feels his team could have played better, especially with the team’s potential. Tovani has high expectations for this team.
“I feel we played okay, we didn’t play an A game. There were moments in the game that were outstanding but I think there were also periods in the game where we were a little lazy… My expectations are extremely high and I believe [the players] have the same expectation for themselves,” Tovani said.
AWHS senior, Jack Wuthnow, felt his team played exceedingly well considering it was the first game of the season.
“We have some pretty high expectations for our team this year so I think we’re just going to keep improving, and this was the starting game so it gives up alot to improve on,” Jack said.
Senior Jonas Salk also felt his team played well, coming out strong and lining up on their defense. Jonas explained, as the second half rolled around, the team lost some of the speed they started with.
“I think we could have come out with more speed and intensity in the second half, but we pulled out a good win and it was a good start to the year,” Jonas said.
The start of the basketball season has fans and coaches excited to see what the AWHS boys varsity team will accomplish. The coaches and players have high expectations for this exhilarating season.
