On Wednesday, March 5, the Archie Williams boys’ varsity volleyball team played its fourth NCS game of the season against the Analy High School Tigers. The Falcons showcased great determination and sportsmanship despite losing 0-3 in an intense game.
The game began with junior setter Max Brasler delivering two consecutive aces, starting the first set off strong and boosting morale. As the game progressed, both teams exchanged kills, repeated out-of-bounds hits, and serves. Despite the support from teammates, including senior outside hitter Zach Wulff and senior middle hitter James Clark, the Falcons lost the first set 17-25.
“It was nerve-racking taking the first serve, but I know that my team trusts me. From [playing] volleyball, I [have] learned to make quick decisions. Setting is a lot about making the right decision at the right time. I just gotta get my sets higher, get momentum, and we’ll [take] it from there,” Max said.
The second set began with the Falcons scoring the first point but quickly losing their lead due to out-of-bounds hits and hard spikes from the Tigers. The Falcons’ junior outside hitters Jack Avela and Duco Nieulant received multiple successful hits from freshman libero Nash Freeman. Despite their efforts, Archie Williams ended the second set with another 17-25 point loss.

“Nash did really well tonight [with] a lot of great passes. He pushed through a lot of those tough plays, and his serving was consistent, so I’m really proud of him tonight. Tonight was a little bit different since everybody’s energy was a little bit lower than before…[but] we have to keep going with what we have and hope for a better future throughout the season,” James said.
The Falcons’ struggle didn’t cease in the third set, with the Tigers maintaining a small lead throughout the set and both teams making crucial mistakes. Despite strong plays, like powerful kills from Zach and supportive defense at the net from James and Duco, the Falcons couldn’t make a comeback. Ultimately, the Tigers secured a 25-21 victory, handing the Falcons a tough loss.
The Archie Williams’ next game is Thursday, March 6, at 5 p.m. at San Marin High School against the Mustangs. The Falcons have high hopes for this season and are aiming to make it to the MCAL playoffs.
“It was a tough game, but we fought hard. I do expect us to be in the MCAL playoffs and make a nice run and hopefully [have more wins] in the playoffs. All [of my] players are super encouraging; they all promote growth [and] learning within the sport,” head coach Alex Perelson said.
