Archie Williams’ students support various sports throughout the year, but one stands atop the rest. Unlike many other high school sports, the basketball team consistently fills the gym with spirited Falcon supporters, creating an electric atmosphere in the stands. Fueled by a successful regular season and an exciting playoff run, basketball has solidified its position as one of the top sources of athletic entertainment for students.

In a recent poll, Pitch reporters asked Falcon students about the most exciting sports to watch at Archie Williams. Among the possible options —football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, soccer, and aquatic sports —37 out of 50 students voted in favor of basketball, making it the fan favorite by a landslide. This poll only confirmed what we already knew: basketball is the most exciting sport to watch at Archie Williams.

For starters, the proximity of the bleachers to the court enables students to feel more connected to the players, fostering a stronger spirit and energy in the stands. The games are fast-paced and often high-scoring, which helps keep the fans engaged throughout the whole time. Due to the highly competitive Marin County Athletic League (MCAL), games are frequently tight, battling until the final buzzer, providing constant entertainment for students. Falcon students enjoy the rush and high school spirit during games, as basketball consistently draws more spectators than other school programs.

Another reason basketball is set apart from other sports at Archie Williams is the impressive feats of athleticism that occur in most matchups. Crowds get excited and pumped when players throw down dunks, net long three-pointers, and drive to the rim past multiple defenders. The sheer intensity of the sport attracts many families and friends to spectate and show support for the program.

The implementation of school themes, such as blackout or whiteout, helps bring students together and provides a different and more authentic way of showing support for the players. Students get excited to match with friends, cheer on their peers, and strive to create an atmosphere unique to Archie Williams.

For decades, the Falcon’s gym has been a host to big names and big games. A constant love for the sport and dedication to the players have long driven the spirit of Falcon basketball. Often a successful program, the Archie Williams basketball team has lifted 27 MCAL banners and eight NCS titles, strongly solidifying itself as a school favorite. Students are optimistic the team will continue its success, and hope to witness many more winning seasons in the future.
