Teacher questions school name

Pirate or pilot? Science teacher Michael “Doc” Wing has a new idea. Archie Franklin Williams, an olympic athlete, WWII fighter pilot, long-time teacher here appeals to Wing as an appropriate choice or the school name instead of Sir Francis Drake.

“I have mixed feelings. I like exploration and I sail but Drake has a dark record.”

Wing’s idea of changing the school name to honor Williams is quite new.

“Someone came into my classroom talking about Archie Williams. I didn’t originally come up with the idea. Also, Seabury talked about it first at staff development.”

Wing is not necessarily fighting to rename the school.

“It’s a good idea but to actually change the name of the school or any institution would be traumatic. If students really want to change it, they could fight for it.”
