Historic season ends for team, coach

The wrestling team made history this season by claiming their first MCAL title. Led by Kiva Corshen, Sebastian Molineaux, Mathieu Isanove, and coached by Johann Gerlach, this squad has really turned this wrestling program around and has a reputation to uphold in the coming seasons.

Part of their success was due to the work they put in outside of practice. Conditioning was a very prevalent part of their lives throughout the season in order to keep them in peak condition for when a big match came.

The team is beyond proud of their accomplishment and they feel love from the school, too.

“I’m super proud, it’s super cool knowing I made Drake history. I’m also super grateful to everyone at Drake who supported us and stayed enthusiastic throughout the season,” Isanove said.

The wrestling team shocked the league when they won because they had been the underdogs throughout the year.

“I think part of our success came from the fact that the big schools didn’t really have us on their radar. We were able to surprise them and show them that they couldn’t just roll over us. I think that led to us ultimitaley beating them,” Isanove said.

Another factor that helped their success is the coaching. Led by coach Johann Gerlach who really pushed them to their potential. Through a lot of perseverance from this coach and motivation this team was able to overcome a lot of adversity and negativity.

“I started with five kids on that team. This year we had 23 kids on the roster. Two years ago, we lost an MCAL dual meet 81-0. So as you can see, there have been some real low spots. But I continued to believe this could develop.” Head Coach Johann Gerlach said.
